Cut'n'Mix evolved through the exploration of random processes and experimentation in creative writing and music composition. Randomness has long been identified as a source of inspiration - not only for authors of fiction, poetry, music and visual art, but also for businesspeople, scientists or creative thinkers of any type. Techniques such as "cut-up", "collage", "cut 'n' mix" and "mashup" are all based on a process of recombining previously unrelated words, sounds or images. In business, this process is often referred to as "lateral thinking" - a way to derail the train of thought from it's linear, predictable route into more uncharted, creative territories. The theory section of this site explores the rationale behind the uses of randomness and other forms of experimentation for the purpose of creative inspiration.

The Cut'n'Mix Postmodern Word Processor:

Cut'n'Mix is a unique word processing application which helps creative writers generate new ideas through the use of different methods of text randomization and manipulation. Cut'n'Mix expands the pallete of tools available to writers with functions not available in standard word processors:

• Automatically blend four input streams of text to achieve a random word mix
• Quickly rearrange the positions of words in text using a simulated paper-and-scissors cut-up interface called the "Cut-up Laboratory". (Also commonly referred to as "Fridge Magnet Poetry")
• Generate pools of random words from Cut'n'Mix's embedded English dictionary database to inspire creativity
• Blend (mashup) words or phrases from up to 4 different text files or "tracks"
• Generate random poetry using the "ROBOPOEM" algorithm which automatically calculates rhythm and rhyme
• Create new words and names using "word shredding" and "word glueing"
• Create automatic poetry or song lyrics
• Find new music group or company names
• Use words creatively in the tradition of William Shakespeare

ROBOCOLLAGE Automatic Collage Generator:

ROBOCOLLAGE stores images and text in an embedded database to be selected randomly for automatic construction of a web page MASHUP. And when I say "mashup" I mean really mashed up: The image files are just strewn and layered randomly across the page... In addition to randomly drawing from this pool of prefab web page elements, the program also optionally allows for mixing up digital photos or artwork from a user-designated folder.
